Let’s Quit Like Sweden

Sweden leads the world at 5.3% smoking incidence.

HOW DID THEY DO IT?

Sweden’s comprehensive approach combines smoking cessation and prevention measures with policies that allow people who smoke to choose alternatives instead. And it’s working. We call it the Swedish Experience.

It’s time for the rest of the world to catch up.

Launched in April 2024, Quit Like Sweden’s purpose is to encourage other countries to replicate the Swedish Experience by making alternatives to smoking:

ACCESSIBLE
Alternatives to smoking must be sold at least wherever cigarettes are sold.

ACCEPTABLE
Alternatives must come in a range of flavours and strengths to be realistic options for people who smoke.

AFFORDABLE
Alternatives must be more affordable than cigarettes.

“Quit Like Sweden’s mission is to replicate the Swedish Experience around the world – a mission that will help save lives.”

WHAT DOES “SMOKE-FREE” MEAN?

Global public experts consider a country be ‘smoke-free’ when its smoking incidence is below 5% of the adult population. Sweden’s is 5.3%.

EU smoking rates are on average five times that of Sweden.
And these are neighbouring countries with similar measures and programmes in place, but not a comprehensive approach.
